1242 Fussy Cat Food Shopping

Updated: Jan 3

Well, I thought I would mix it up and do something different for you guys today. I am always talking about beauty products, stationery, and my life. Those of you who know me personally will already know I have a cat, an extremely fussy cat.

He is leaning more and more towards the expensive foods that are anywhere between £5 and £10 a box. This means I am spending anywhere between £10 - £20 on cat food a week which is just ridiculous. I try to buy the box of 40 pouches when it is on offer and then once a week, I will buy him a couple of tins or something different as it seems he gets bored of eating the same thing over and over.

Don’t get me wrong, I am aware he is a cat. I know most people will think “he is an animal; he should eat what he is given” and I do agree but he is my cat and any animal under my care will receive the best care and food I can provide. I mean why I should I get to do what I want if that means I can’t buy my pet food? If you have that attitude, you should not have a pet. I do understand that he gets bored, would you want to be eating the same thing every day of your life? No, for the most part, there is always something that you love but you would get bored of it if you ate it every day. Anyway, I went to my local pets at home and picked up a couple of different things to try. I bought three kinds of food, 2 packets of biscuits (different flavours) and three toys.

Here is what I bought:

  • Pets at Home Wet Food Pouches in Fish and Ocean Fish (Jelly) – 12 Pouches £3.49

  • Pets at Home 100% Catnip Filled Plush Ball £4 x2

  • Kong Kickeroo Pink Toy £4.50

  • Pets at Home Complete Nutrition Adult Cat Food Rich in Chicken 800g £2.49

  • Pets at Home Complete Nutrition Adult Cat Food Rich in Salmon 800g £2.49

  • Seriously Good Bistro Tuna with Prawn Layers Adult Cat Food Pot 80g £1.19

  • Seriously Good Bistro Tuna Lion with Crab Adult Cat Food Tin 70g £0.99

Yes, in total I spent £23.15 for a cat but the toys last a long time, the biscuits will last at least a couple of months and the box of pouches was cheaper than what he usually eats so it is a splurge but an experimental splurge.

So, I bought this just to try it, it is a lot cheaper than the box I normally buy. I am wishing that he likes this food! The food I usually buy is Sheba or Gourmet. Sheba is £5.59 for 1020g, Gourmet is £5.29 for 1020g and with Pets at Home, you get 1200g for £3.49. I will be so happy if he eats these pouches. I won’t mind buying this one. If he likes the fish ones I might see if I can get the other flavours just to try them and see how it goes. Stay tuned to see if it does like it. If you have a fussy cat, please let me know what food you use, I would love to try it myself. My cat won’t eat, Whiskas, Felix, Hi-Life, Tesco, Asda’s, Tiger etc. They say a pet takes after its owner; he is my cat. (I am quite fussy myself)

My cat adores these. I am not sure what it is. There are similar toys with the same materials and in different shapes but this one sends him insane. He sits there licking/washing it, rubs his little head all over it, rolls around the floor with it and all the above is ridiculously cute. This is the one that I can’t find online. My cat loves it so much that he usually snatches it out of the bag before I have the chance to cut the plastic off which is why a couple of the images were a bit rubbish. I was trying to do them quickly so I can give the bits to the cat because he was in the bag which I will show you.

There is a little confession here, I didn’t pick this up, my mum did. It is all her fault. Some new toys were about due, to be honest. I couldn’t tell you the last time I bought him one. That’s a lie, I bought him one in March, but I think my neighbour’s cat has stolen it as I can’t find it. He seems to love feathers and things he can do which I call bunny feet. Bunny feet are where the cat holds an item with their two front paws and with both back feet so an almost running motion against the item. If you haven’t seen bunny feet, I am happy to confirm it is super cute to watch. I can only see a purple one on the website which I will link below. If you purchase it, please do let me know.

I do think we had the same issue with the biscuits. I can never find a mixed bag of biscuits, you can either pay extra and get multiple little bags to mix them up or you must buy a huge bag of one flavour. Can you imagine eating the same flavour crisps for 6 months? I know I would get bored by day 3. I don’t know about you but my cat constantly has a bowl of biscuits out 24 hours a day so there is food there whenever he wants. He gets the pouches mostly when he is sitting by his bowl waiting for them. Anyway, I bought the Pets at Home wet food I thought I might as well try the biscuits and the price is good.

You can get 2kg for £5. I didn’t know if he would like them or what flavour, so I picked up two of the small bags as you have seen. Again, they have been in the house for about 3 hours, and he has knocked both bags over, so I think these are a win. If he keeps eating, I will be purchasing the big bags of these. I like that the bags are resealable, and the size of the biscuits is nice.

I was intrigued by the word “layers”. I thought it might be something different as a bit of a mix-up, you know. Again, I wouldn’t feed him this as an everyday thing as it says they should have up to 3.5 pots a day, meaning I would be spending £3.60 a day on cat food, not including biscuits or treats. I am pleased to report upon arriving home my cat pretty much jumped in the Pets at Home bag. When I pulled out these tins, he was drooling over this one. He ate the paste/pate portion of it, and I was incredibly pleased that he would stop eating as if he were finished and then edge back to the food and he did these 2 or 3 times. He didn’t finish the entire thing in one go. So, I am happy to give this one a thumbs up so far.

I have come to learn that my cat prefers fish. It seems to be the one he will eat all the flavour pouches if I get a box of fish flavours. As I mentioned I wanted to try a couple of different brands and types because he is getting old, and it could be that he is getting old now so I thought it could be his teeth are getting sore. I don’t think he has ever had crab either so that will be something new for him. I do want to just clarify I will not be feeding him this permanently but if he does like it, I will treat him every so often. You can get 26 tins for £20; they have a good date on them so if he likes them, I might do this as a treat.
