111 Valentine’s Day!

Valentine’s Day

As I know it, Valentine’s Day is a special day for couples. They spend the day showing how much they love each other in many ways. Some go out for a meal, movies, theatre, for a drink, get a takeaway etc. They are all kinds of different ways to celebrate; you can pretty much do whatever you want as there are no rules.

There are often chocolates, flowers and cards involved but it is not limited to these, there are many more novelty items you could give or receive on this marked occasion. From what I know the meaning to this day in modern times doesn’t change it is about celebrating your love for someone.

No matter how serious or unserious your relationship is you can choose to celebrate by personal preference which I think is a great idea as you can tailor make the day to fit your schedules. It is most common to celebrate with your partner, but it has been known for a group of singles to go out for a laugh as well. Therefore, I say it is about celebrating love, doesn’t matter who it is.

As well as individual celebrations held in various places, some churches will also put on service for those who would like to join. Every year Valentine’s Day falls on the 14th of February but is not a holiday as such. I think not having it a public holiday is a good thing as it means you can do what you want, and everything runs the same. An example would be shops. On public holidays, the retail industry follows the same rules as a bank holiday which means they are open for fewer hours. Most people don’t tend to mind shops closing early but it does mean if you are not celebrating this occasion your life doesn’t change, you can carry on as normal.

I can’t say this has always been the case because I have only really noticed it in the past couple of years but almost straight after Christmas all you see in card shops is Valentine’s Day décor, everything is red or pink and there are millions of different heart-shaped sweets and boxes. There is probably a boost in the jewellery sales as well.

I, unfortunately, don’t celebrate this day each year but it could change in the future, and I am in no way against it. Let me know how you feel about Valentine’s Day, people seem to love it or hate it. One thing I like about it is that you often get random boxes of chocolates on a crazy sale so you can buy them and save them for later or even wrap them up to give later in the year if they stay in date.
