This is a holiday mostly celebrated in Wales. It is known as a national day and following similar celebratory dates, you will often see parades along the stress. People come together and celebrate this special day on the 1st of Match every year.
As you may gather from the name the day is in honour of David. St David’s day became a national holiday first, upon his death in the 18th Century on the 1st of March. Previously the day was voted a public holiday in the early 2000s but failed. Later in 2006 85% of Welsh would have liked the day to be a bank holiday so a petition began but was rejected.
The year of his death is unknown due to poor documentation in his time. The day the 1st of March is almost 100% accurate on the other hand. Other than Wales, St David’s day is not counted as a national holiday but that doesn’t stop the odd celebration. Many people celebrate the day differently but the common way that is used to celebrate is dinner parties, parties, recitals and sometimes concerts.
David was very popular in his time, especially in the Celtic World. His popularity was due to his profession as a teacher. As said above there are parades held to celebrate his honour, the biggest ones are often held in Cardiff. British monarch or the Prince of Wales will often attend one of the celebrations for St David’s Day to a Military Tattoo
To mark this day children often put on a play at school with recitations and or singing about the various activities performed throughout the celebrations. Schools will no longer close early as they used to on this holiday, but it does vary, a few schools will still award this to their students but not many actually do.
So did you learn more about his particular day? I know I had no clue about why this day was celebrated at all. All I knew was the name of the day and it was a holiday recognised in England.
