568 My First College Experience

What can I say about my first year of college? Overall, I didn’t enjoy it and I couldn’t wait to get it over with. If I had the choice, I wouldn’t have done that course again. I am not sure why I had such a strong dislike for it. Unfortunately, I found out after I had done it that I didn’t need to do that course to get on the one I wanted which is annoying and I should have been told this before I did the course. This shows the amount of support they provide sadly.

I was excited to be doing more than just sitting behind a desk and doing nothing, however, the course was not for me. There are a few things that contributed to me disliking the course, the tutors and I didn’t see eye to eye. I never really got into trouble and didn’t have any issues with behaviour, but the tutors treated me as if I was the student who doesn’t do their work, doesn’t turn up etc. I think the fact that it was an all-girls course didn’t help at all. Surprisingly, as far as I know, and can remember there wasn’t drama, nothing worth noting though, the girls were good and 99% of us got on. I don’t remember who didn’t, but I can almost guarantee there was an argument or disagreement at some point over the year even if it was just a small one.

I didn’t like the approach the tutor had, she immediately tried to intimidate us, comparing herself to a lion when she is angry. Straight off the bat, the tutors didn’t like me because I pierced my ears. Facial piercings, excessive bracelets, or rings I could completely understand but I couldn’t understand why a small stud in your ears was not appropriate. I would understand restricting earrings to small, plain, modest studs but restricting it down to no piercings at all, a bit over the top. I mean, each student pays money to have their ears pierced and a small stud is not going to hurt anyone. College is supposed to be preparing us for work, I am not sure of any profession other than medical that restricts piercings to just not allowed to wear them.

My class finished early so they arranged extra lessons to add to our portfolio, classes such as eyelash perming, spray tanning etc. As soon as I finished the work to get my qualification, I left as quick as I could and never came back, I practically ran out the door. I think I went in once more to finalise everything.

I don’t think I came away with any knowledge. I mean I had completed the qualification, but I couldn’t tell anyone how to do the treatments, even straight after the course. At the end of the day, I still got the qualification, no harm was done.

It instilled in me that you’re not going to like everyone you meet, it is about making the best of a bad situation which is going to happen a few times. The pros of this course are the following:

The freedom of having at more unusual times, for example, it wasn’t 9 am until 3 pm, it was 11 am until 7 pm or 9:30 am until 6 pm etc. Not having to attend college every day, due to the longer days I only had to go in twice a week, so I worked as well for myself as I could get a part-time job. The uniform that maybe I didn’t completely agree with was smart and comfortable. Stay tuned for my second year of college.
