Day 2 – London to Edinburgh – Thursday 16th May 2019
Today was about getting to Scotland to catch the Orkney tour, so a lot of travelling and a small portion of enjoying the great city of Edinburgh. Our train was at 11:00 at Kings Cross Station (London). I got a little nervous because I could see the sat nav in our taxi and it was getting closer and closer to 11:00 and we hadn’t even got to the station yet, let alone on the train. It turns out the timing was pretty much perfect, we got to the station about and by the time we walked through the station to the departure boards we waited for about 5 minutes and our platform was announced, platform 6. It was easy getting on the train it left the station dead on 11:00. The journey took a bit over 4 hours, and we arrived in Edinburgh Waverly at 15:20.
The Ibis Styles (our hotel) was only 5 minutes away. Checking in was so quick and easy. The staff were helpful, and the facilities available were impressive for an Ibis. This is the first hotel I have stayed in that had a 24-hour hot drink available (not the instant stuff in your room). We got rooms 301 and 302, I took room 301. I was also impressed with the room; it was quirky in a good way. The side table was a skinny wine barrel which was cool.
After we sorted ourselves out, we headed out to see a bit of Edinburgh and to find food.
We had a little look around the gardens along Princes Street and then headed towards the Royal Mile. We found a cute coffee shop, called “The Milkman”. There were no chairs, you sat on the wall, which was shaped like a chair, so it didn’t use up floor space which is cool and clever. I got a cloudy lemonade which was super refreshing. Then we went to The Royal Mile; we couldn’t pick where we wanted to eat so we walked back towards the station as we knew there was a Weatherspoon’s right next door called The Booking Office.
I think that was planned for Thursday being curry night at Weatherspoon’s. After we had finished, we headed back to the hotel, we got there at about 19:30 and we took advantage of free hot drinks by the reception, I got a hot chocolate (it was good). I thought that getting back to the hotel that early was going to be boring, but I ended up just chilling and sorting through a few bits.
I knew tomorrow was going to be early, so the early night was probably a good idea. I watched a bit of You’ve Been Framed, and then hit the hay.
